Book ( About Small Ruminants Diseases )

👉 Diseases affecting small ruminants, such as sheep and goats, encompass a spectrum of illnesses that can significantly impact their health, productivity, and economic viability for farmers. Understanding these diseases is crucial for effective management and prevention strategies. Here, we'll delve into an overview of common diseases affecting small ruminants, their symptoms, transmission routes, and preventive measures.

1. Gastrointestinal Parasites: Small ruminants are highly susceptible to gastrointestinal parasites such as worms (nematodes) and coccidia. These parasites can cause weight loss, diarrhea, anemia, and even death if left untreated. Regular deworming, pasture management, and proper hygiene practices are essential for controlling gastrointestinal parasites.

2. Foot Rot: Foot rot is a contagious bacterial infection that affects the hoof of sheep and goats. It causes lameness, reluctance to walk, and swelling in the affected area. Wet and muddy conditions favor the development and transmission of foot rot bacteria. Proper foot hygiene, regular hoof trimming, and maintaining dry living conditions can help prevent foot rot.

3. Contagious Ecthyma (Orf): Orf is a viral disease characterized by lesions on the lips, muzzle, and udders of sheep and goats. It can cause discomfort, reduced feed intake, and secondary bacterial infections. Orf is highly contagious and can spread through direct contact with infected animals or contaminated environments. Vaccination, isolation of infected animals, and good hygiene practices are essential for preventing the spread of Orf.

4. Caseous Lymphadenitis (CLA): CLA is a chronic bacterial infection caused by Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis. It results in abscess formation in lymph nodes and internal organs, leading to decreased productivity and carcass condemnation. CLA can spread through direct contact with infected animals or contaminated environments. Strict biosecurity measures, culling of infected animals, and vaccination (where available) are important for controlling CLA.

5. Scrapie: Scrapie is a fatal neurodegenerative disease affecting sheep and goats. It is caused by abnormal prion proteins and is characterized by behavioral changes, loss of coordination, and severe itching. Scrapie can spread horizontally within flocks through contact with infected placenta, birth fluids, or contaminated equipment. Genetic selection for scrapie resistance, strict biosecurity protocols, and surveillance programs are key components of scrapie control.

6. Caprine Arthritis Encephalitis (CAE): CAE is a viral disease affecting goats, caused by a lentivirus. It can manifest as arthritis, mastitis, pneumonia, or encephalitis in infected animals. CAE spreads through the ingestion of colostrum, milk, or direct contact with infected body fluids. Testing and culling of seropositive animals, pasteurization of milk, and segregation of infected animals are important strategies for controlling CAE.

7. Enterotoxemia (Overeating Disease): Enterotoxemia is a bacterial disease caused by Clostridium perfringens. It primarily affects young ruminants and is characterized by sudden death, bloating, and diarrhea. Enterotoxemia is often associated with sudden changes in diet or overconsumption of grain. Vaccination against Clostridium perfringens toxins, gradual diet transitions, and proper feeding management can help prevent enterotoxemia outbreaks.

Understanding the epidemiology, clinical signs, and preventive measures for these diseases is essential for small ruminant producers to maintain healthy and productive herds. Regular veterinary care, vaccination programs, and sound management practices are critical components of disease control and prevention in small ruminant operations.
